Last week, I released a short story titled Data Collector (loosely inspired by AI misinformation surrounding the Israel-Hamas war) —
— as part of my initiative to release one short story a month based on something in the news or general zeitgeist.
Now, it’s time to move on to the month at hand! Here’s what I’ll be focused on in the coming weeks for a December story titled Method.
Note: I would have named it Method Act but I worried it might seem like a sequel to the famous Whoopi Goldberg franchise.
THEME:
A.I. Fears For Screen Actors
INSPIRATION:
Concerns Over A.I. Provisions In SAG-AFTRA’s Deal With Hollywood Studios (Link)
WHY?:
Well, it’s a topic I touched on somewhat in the short story Black Man with a Whip (and the Terror from Tech-Town):
Excerpt:
By the time Nate reached San Francisco, he’d been pulled over thrice for his logoless, unmarked car—and had rejected four emails from Michael about movie studios seeking the digital rights to his old likeness. The hell are they gonna do with a digital version of me in the movies… he thought. …make ‘The Help 2’?
And in a recent issue of Sci-Fi Fuel, I recommended this conversation about A.I. in Hollywood:
LISTEN: The Town - “Potential Backfires in the Actors AI Deal”
If you’re wondering why many actors seem unsatisfied by the AI aspect of their deal with the studios, Justine Bateman expertly lays out the details here as well as a few frighteningly realistic hypotheticals for the future of an industry that’s relying less and less on humans each day.
I was inspired and horrified by many of the points made there and haven’t been able to stop theorizing and inventing scenarios around how some of the worst possibilities could shape the future of entertainment. I’m exited to spin it all into a story for you to enjoy by the month’s end.
Wish me luck!
